 Stories from the Silicon Island

With a heritage dating back to the mid-1970s, today Ireland’s semiconductor industry employs in excess of 20,000 people, and Ireland is an operational base to 15 of the world’s top 30 semiconductor companies.  Ireland is recognised as a major semiconductor cluster, home to: the most advanced fab in Europe, a site investment of over € 30 billion; 3 of the world’s top 4 AI chip companies, 3 of the top 5 EDA’s, a cluster of R&D/design and tradition of successful deep tech start up and a well-recognised semiconductor RTO/RPO.  Built around this is a vibrant support eco-system including, for example, a strong industry association, research capability, leading equipment and materials suppliers, recruitment and construction & engineering services landscape.

MIDAS is Ireland’s Semiconductor and Microelectronics industry association.  The association has 90 members all with operations in Ireland.  MIDAS is active in supporting the industry at many levels including the operation of an industry led Electronic Systems Training Program.  John Blake will talk about the scale, activities and evolution of the sector in Ireland. John will also talk about Ireland’s recently launched national semiconductor strategy ‘Silicon Island’.
